Biography
I am the Restoration Director at the Atlantic Salmon Trust, working with partners to deliver the change that is required to support vibrant wild salmon populations into the future. The focus of my Fellowship is to travel to Canada, the USA and Scandinavia to understand the role that river and salmon rights have in wild salmon management. I will be learning directly from people working across these regions, from both an Indigenous viewpoint and wider, and bringing this learning to the UK.
The UK does not currently have a system of rights but salmon is embedded in our culture. I will be finding out where there are routes to distil existing roles and responsibilities, and how to translate the learning. This is particularly relevant to an up-and-coming cohort of salmon managers who wish to change the hierarchical systems currently in place.
