I am a science and cultural engagement strategist based in Birmingham. I am the Director of BLAST Fest, a pop-up festival and community engagement platform that fuses the creative power of science with Black arts and culture to catalyse social change.
My community organising and health development background includes maternal nutrition, women's civic leadership, heritage and culture – all influencing my approach to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and cultural programming and public engagement style.
During my Churchill Fellowship, I travelled to the USA, Canada and Guyana, to explore community-led approaches to building 'science capital' through arts, culture and philanthropy. My subsequent Wellcome Trust Fellowship built on this, exploring how science can be driven by social justice and powered by inclusive, equitable and culturally relevant research. My ongoing exploration continues to moves beyond traditional ideas of inclusion to ownership, belonging, community leadership and philanthropy within the context of systems change, collective liberation and regenerative development.
Strategist Anita Shervington (CF 2015) has organised a free workshop with Sally Purdie (CF 2020) this month. The aim of the workshop was to demonstrate how storytelling can better engage the public with the social impact side of engineering.
