Biography

I travelled to Australia for my Fellowship in 2016. At the time, I was teaching primary school music in east London. The purpose of my Fellowship was to learn more about the Australian primary music education system and its positive impact on the musical identity of children in Australia. After my Fellowship, I implemented approaches to curriculum planning and delivery that I had learnt from observing some brilliant teachers and I shared my experience with colleagues in presentation sessions.

I have since moved on from this role, working first for music education charity Orchestras for All and now as a policy adviser at the Department for Education. In both these subsequent roles, my experiences from my Fellowship were formative in influencing my ability to think laterally and creatively about problems and to seek answers collaboratively, involving voices with different experiences and perceptions.

I remain passionately committed to high-quality music education for all young people and continue to sing in and conduct choirs. As part of my previous role, I enjoyed the challenge of finding creative solutions to music-making for young people during the Covid-19 lockdown.
