Biography
For over 12 years I have worked at an award-winning architectural practice specialising in housing. I have been involved in numerous schemes from early design stages through to construction, completion and occupation, and I am now one of the associates at Bell Phillips.
There is an urgent need for more housing in the UK, but paradoxically this is paired with difficult viability conditions, resulting in construction significantly slowing down. Therefore, overall, I see the Greater London Authority's emergency housebuilding measures as a positive step towards progress. However, some of the proposed changes risk a reduction in the quality of future housing.
Housing has a fundamental impact on our physical and mental health, our sense of safety and security, on educational development and on job prospects, and therefore on our overall quality of life. It is essential that new homes coming forward are of the highest standard.
I have identified particularly successful housing models in Germany and Switzerland, the architecture of which I intend to interrogate to understand the instrumental ways in which they create homes that people can not only survive in, but thrive in.
