Biography
I am the Head of Community Organising at The Advocacy Academy, supporting young people in South London to build their collective power and take action on the most pressing issues of our time.
Our communities are either being gentrified or left to dereliction; in both cases, the needs and livelihoods of ordinary people are devalued. I am inspired by communities that are fighting this false choice by getting organised and purchasing assets in their neighbourhoods, decentring the demands of the market and building neighbourhoods that prioritise the needs of local people.
I hope to learn models of democratic participation for ordinary people in the governance of community-owned assets, what becomes possible when we do this well and how to sustain the assets over generations. I will be bringing everything I learn back to Brixton, where I am part of a team fundraising to secure local historical assets for community ownership and building towards a more just future for Brixton.
