I am an entrepreneur, activist, speaker and writer, with an MA in Native American Studies and an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Keele University. As founder of Fashion Revolution, the world's largest fashion activism movement, I have spent the past decade pressuring the industry to take responsibility for its social and environmental impacts. In 2023, I co-founded League of Artisans to promote artisanal skills as a vital response to global challenges.
Fashion and textiles are dominated by mass production, synthetic fibres and toxic chemicals, impacting human health and ecosystems. But it hasn't always been that way. All around the world, over thousands of years, plants have been used to make and dye our clothes. My Fellowship explores how we can mend fashion's relationship with nature through botanical fibres and dyes. Focusing on little-known plants that can be sustainably cultivated, I will examine the benefits these fibres and dyes could bring to local communities in Latin America, and whether they could hold the secret to fashion's sustainable future.
