Biography
I work with policymakers, researchers and practitioners to understand how changes in the economy, labour market and technology affect people's opportunities to thrive. My Fellowship focuses on how former industrial communities around the world have rebuilt prosperous local economies following industrial decline.
I have spent several years working on economic development, social mobility and labour market policy, and have become increasingly interested in why some places recover from deindustrialisation more successfully than others. I will visit communities in Europe, North America and Australia that have successfully navigated the post-industrial economic transition and created new sources of growth, investment and good work. I want to understand what has worked in practice, from skills and education to industrial strategy and local leadership, and identify lessons that could be applied in the UK.
I hope the Fellowship will contribute practical ideas for creating opportunity in communities facing economic change and help support a more optimistic conversation about economic renewal and shared prosperity.
