Biography

I am a sexual health facilitator at the UK Health Security Agency, working across national and regional systems to reduce inequalities and harms associated with STIs, and supporting the development and implementation of England's Syphilis Response Plan. Syphilis has re-emerged as a major public health challenge. Diagnoses are increasing, and cases of congenital syphilis are rising, disproportionately affecting people experiencing the greatest health inequalities, including women experiencing homelessness, women who use drugs, sex workers, and those with experience of the justice system.

I am interested in how syphilis has been represented in art, literature and wider culture, shaped by ideas of morality and shame. Women have often been stigmatised in relation to transmission, and these narratives continue to influence the epidemic today, affecting women's experiences of and access to care.

I will visit the USA and Spain to explore how systems are addressing syphilis through approaches that work with communities and respond to overlapping health and social needs. I hope to use the learning to support more equitable approaches for women in England.
