Palliative and end of life care in Prison
Altering people perceptions of palliative and end of life care within the prison population.

I am an advanced clinical nurse practitioner based at HMP Oakwood in Wolverhampton. The main topic of my Fellowship is dying in prison and ensuring that prisoners are awarded the dignity of dying in peace and comfort, where they wish to be. The Fellowship will allow me to provide continued professional development by sharing my own expertise with others on a national and international platform.
Nursing in prisons is primarily to rehabilitate: the focus of palliation is not to rehabilitate but to show empathy and compassion. It is a completely different aspect of health in justice nursing as it purely focuses on patient care.
I have 14 years of prison nursing experience. I go over and above to make this my area of expertise. I have developed a reputation and have established networks so I already have a platform on which to share at a local, national and international level. This matter is of such importance and this Fellowship will have a real life-changing impact for prisoners, families, officers and healthcare. Andy Warhol said 'The idea is not to live forever, but to create something that will' and I aim for this to be my legacy.
