Biography

I am a police constable within Police Scotland's national Children and Young People team, who are responsible for corporate parenting across the organisation and supporting our care-experienced community. I am a proud corporate parent, and my Fellowship is dedicated to advancing the safety, wellbeing and inclusion of children with experience of care by focusing on compassionate practice, genuine collaboration and systemic change.

I aim to learn how policing and public services can better respect the rights, voices and lived experiences of people with experience of care. I want to explore practical, trauma-informed approaches from around the world that will enhance responsiveness, empathy and effectiveness within Scotland.

As a police officer, I have witnessed how gaps in support can leave people with experience of care vulnerable. But I have also seen the transformative impact when they are heard, valued and empowered. My goal is to use the insights gained to shape policy, improve training and strengthen multi-agency collaboration, so that we all work to create lasting positive change and make Scotland the best place to grow up.

Through the first leg of his Fellowship in the USA, Grant Trainer explored what it means to protect and support children with experience of care. Drawing on learning from organisations in Albany, New York City, Brooklyn, and Seattle, he reflects on approaches that place children’s identity, dignity, and relationships at the heart of protection. He is now bringing this learning back to Scotland, where it is shaping his research into policing, care experience, and trauma-informed support, ahead of the next stage of his Fellowship in New Zealand.
