Biography
I'm a Chartered Forester who currently works for Scottish Forestry. The focus of my Fellowship is to learn from other counties how they integrate deer management training into formal forestry education and general forest management.
Improving deer management and reducing the number of deer in Scotland is central to enhancing biodiversity and creating resilient and sustainable forests. Deer management training is not usually part of formal forestry education in the UK; traditionally it sits within game and wildlife management education. This results in a separation between those who manage the forests and those who manage the deer.
I am visiting countries who have different approaches to deer management training. For some it is within forestry education, for others it is with other disciplines such as conservation or pest management. I will better understand the pros and cons of each approach and bring that learning back to the UK to inform how I will influence change within forest management training.
