Biography
I am the Founder of Housing for Protection, an initiative exploring how housing systems can enable refugee protection credibly and at scale. The work focuses on how housing pathways shape outcomes across asylum, temporary accommodation and safe routes, producing system analysis, feasibility studies and practical proposals for scalable housing solutions.
Housing for Protection brings together expertise from housing, government and civil society to identify approaches that are both effective and deliverable. Over the past 20 years, I have worked on Safe Routes across government, civil society and frontline delivery. I co-founded Safe Passage International, focused on securing safe family reunion routes for refugees, where I now serve as a trustee. My work has included advocating for and helping shape new Safe Routes with government, including Communities for Afghans, Homes for Ukraine and Named Sponsorship.
My Fellowship explores the conditions that allow meaningful refugee housing approaches to scale and endure in ways that work for both newcomers and the communities receiving them. Rather than looking for a single model to replicate, I am exploring how different systems remain sustainable under different forms of pressure, and what those lessons could mean for the future of refugee and asylum housing in the UK. In the United States, I’ll focus on how refugee housing and welcoming infrastructure can remain resilient under political pressure. In Uganda, I will look at the conditions required for genuine self-reliance and agency within a protection system operating under resource constraints. In Uruguay, I will explore what enables community-based housing and integration approaches to remain sustainable over the long term.
The Fellowship will form the first year of Housing for Protection's Global Inquiry, bringing international learning directly into work with housing, government and civil society in the UK.
