Exploring community-led approaches to regeneration in inner city areas
2023
London
I am a manager of projects that put local people at the heart of decision-making around public spaces. My Fellowship will explore community-led and participatory design approaches to regeneration of a number of inner city areas in the USA.
I am interested in how we can build more effective coalitions, including governments, grassroots groups, funders and creatives, to produce better results for existing communities. This is particularly timely as housing becomes an issue central to political discourse in the UK.
I currently work in the co-design team at Sustrans London on public space projects that are often part of wider regeneration schemes. I spent 2022 managing Creative Civic Change, a project for social arts charity Peckham Platform which brought together artists and locals to creatively respond to changes in the area. For two years, I was a member of the Old Kent Road community design review panel, focused on an area subject to a large-scale regeneration programme.
I hope that the learnings from my Fellowship can support equitable regeneration in the UK, through providing practical examples of best practice and by expanding international networks.
