Biography
I am Head of Innovation at Ofgem, the independent energy regulator for Great Britain. The focus of my Fellowship will be to explore how to accelerate the deployment of low carbon technologies on energy networks. I will be visiting France, Denmark and China to understand how regulators, utilities and partners have deployed a wide range of innovations in each of these countries.
The UK trials innovation well but struggles to scale it, particularly in energy networks where deployment at times prioritises network company returns over consumer value. As Head of Ofgem's Innovation team, I oversee £750m of low-carbon funding and have hands-on experience in economic regulation, start-up scaling, and testing propositions across international markets. I understand where the UK system falls short, but lack exposure to the broader cultural, political and institutional levers other countries have used successfully.
This research will help me bring international evidence to bear on the management of current innovation funding, the design of future frameworks, and contribute to the upcoming debates on the future of network regulation.
