Biography
I was an archaeologist for the first part of my professional life. A Churchill Fellowship in 2003 propelled me to become a full-time writer, after helping with funding to travel and research a biography of Admiral Collingwood. Since then I have published 12 more books on history, archaeology, nature and in particular trees – including bestsellers The King in the North and The Wisdom of Trees.
I own and manage two woodlands in County Durham and am a director of the non-profit organisation Woods for the Trees. I have also been a Royal Literary Fund Fellow and I am a Visiting Fellow at the University of Newcastle's Department of History, Classics and Archaeology. I am also Co-director of the Bernician Studies Group.
