I am the Director of the Criminal Justice Alliance, which is a network of 160 organisations working towards a fair and effective criminal justice system.
The purpose of my Fellowship was to explore the use of prison university partnerships and my findings focused on how those partnerships helped to develop leaders with lived experience.
At the time of my Fellowship I was Head of Policy at Prisoners' Education Trust. I had been involved in establishing the Prison University Partnerships in Learning (PUPiL) network and had helped set up a partnership between Goldsmith's University and HMPYOI Isis, a young adult prison in London.
As a result of my Fellowship, I changed to my current job. In this role I have worked with our lived-experience expert group and a series of paid interns supported by The Longford Trust (who support people who have been in prison to go to university), to carry out peer research and co-produce a lived-experience leadership programme.
In June 2021 we secured half the funding we need to run a two-year London pilot of this exciting programme, inspired by my Fellowship. We have a year to secure match funding for the remainder – so watch this space.
