Biography
I work as a freelance innovation and business development consultant.
My 2001 Fellowship was categorised under Exploration and Leadership. I took a team of five people (three British and two local Bolivians) on a first descent of River Parapeti in south-east Bolivia. I have a long-standing interest in South America, the Amazon, its history, population and development.
The ephemeral River Parapeti flows through the Kaa-Iya del Gran Chaco National Park – an isolated and sporadically populated area of south-east Bolivia. The expedition was to test if the course of the Parapeti joined the Amazon, or headed south to join Rio de la Plata, which an 1872 Royal Geographic Society report failed to conclude.
Dense river vegetation prevented full navigation. We connected with some people from the 22 Izoceno communities in the area. We raised concerns about the impact of inappropriate agriculture (rice and soya) in areas with low rainfall. We demonstrated the importance and value of treating all team members equally.
In addition to newspaper articles and lectures, the Fellowship supported a unique opportunity, allowing us to use that support to extend awareness of the expedition.
