Biography
I am a resident orthopaedic surgeon working in the NHS in Glasgow, Scotland. Waiting lists for life-changing joint replacement surgery are too long in the UK. As a result, people with arthritis are living with chronic pain, struggling to walk, unable to work and sometimes in a state that the recent evidence has shown is 'worse than death'. I want to learn from other healthcare systems how we can become more efficient, reduce waiting times and help these people.
I have a genuine interest in service improvement that I have developed throughout my career as a doctor since 2017. Through sustained engagement with improvement science I have led a number of service delivery projects and made positive change in multiple departments and hospitals in Scotland.
I believe we have a lot to learn from the USA, Canada and Australia - where different healthcare systems all seem to deliver more efficient care for people living with arthritis. I want to study how other health systems engage and incentivise staff and to understand how we can harness technology to boost our productivity and deliver better and more timely care for our patients.
