I have worked in the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) field for many years and have an outstanding track record in a diverse range of roles (deputy head, assistant head, teacher, local authority education officer and educational publisher).
I now work as BackPocketTeacher – an author, trainer and consultant in the field of child bereavement, specialising in the (sadly often overlooked) needs of bereaved children with SEND.
I also work as a training facilitator for the national child bereavement charities Winston's Wish and Child Bereavement UK.
In autumn 2020 I began studying for a PhD alongside my work as BackPocketTeacher, researching bereavement and SEND, specifically: how do children with severe learning disabilities (SLD) and profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) express their grief and how do they communicate their questions, concerns and thoughts about grief?
Teacher Sarah Helton (CF 2018) shared learnings from her Fellowship in a webinar hosted by the Child Bereavement Network, as part of Children’s Grief Awareness Week on 23 November. Sarah’s Fellowship explored best practice for supporting bereaved children who have SEND.
