I currently sit as a cross-bencher in the House of Lords. I competed for Great Britain at five Paralympic Games. My Churchill Fellowship was for studying Talent Identification programmes in Australia and how they worked with disabled athletes from grass roots to elite level.
I was interested in exploring this area because at the time the UK was starting to make big decisions about whether to centralise athlete programmes and whether to build a single British Institute. Australia had already been through several different forms of this. To spend time in another country to see their experience at first hand rather than reading about it was amazing and made a big impact on all my future work.
