Art and the healing environment
Establishing initiatives to encourage art in therapeutic environments and hospitals
2020
I am a curator and have worked in various visual arts organisations in the UK. More recently I’ve been working on public art programmes in the health sector. I’ve been developing art commissions in hospitals including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Maudsley Psychiatric Hospital, Guy's and St Thomas’ Hospital and Cambridge University Hospitals. I’m an advisor to SALUS Global Knowledge Exchange, and a trustee of London Arts and Health.
The first phase of my Fellowship research involved visiting hospitals looking at innovative approaches to healthcare design and art integration in Denmark and Sweden as well as meeting curators, architects, artists, researchers, arts and health professionals. The second phase involved traveling to Japan to explore site-responsive art and architectural integration in hospitals as well as visiting the Benesse Art Sites to find inspiration for creating enriching and meditative spaces and new ways of commissioning art in health settings in the UK.
