New Fellowships postponed due to Covid-19

“This is a difficult decision to make, but it is the only sensible route while the global situation is so unstable,” said Churchill Fellowship Chief Executive Julia Weston. “International travel for our Fellows remains unpredictable for the near future, as does the feasibility of hosts in other countries receiving them, meaning that we cannot guarantee Fellows’ safety or the success of their research overseas. During this time, we will continue to fund pandemic-related work by Churchill Fellows across the UK, while preparing to open for applications in 2022.”

While we have not been able to award or run travel Fellowships, we have instead directed our grants towards supporting Fellows’ remarkable work in communities and sectors across the UK. We have provided £456,919 in Covid Action Fund grants for UK projects by Churchill Fellows that tackle the effects of Covid-19 in every area of society - from food banks to medical research, domestic abuse to educational attainment. We have also provided £625,547 in Activate Fund grants for Churchill Fellows to scale up their UK projects in a wide range of other crucial issues, from the environment to racial equity, dementia to drugs policy.

Meanwhile we are in regular communication with current Fellows who are waiting to travel. We are working with them to undertake part of their Fellowships online if they wish to do so, and will support them to travel as soon as it becomes possible again.

We will continue to monitor the possibilities for international travel, and hope to reopen for applications in the autumn of 2022.
