Developing a migration network

Introduction
The recent Black Lives Matter movement and Ukraine invasion have brought urgent attention to the need to support migrant communities in the UK. Cultural institutions have become increasingly aware of the role they can play in telling the stories of migrant communities in order to build understanding, public engagement and empathy in this area and build bridges between communities.
2022 Award
Emily Miller (CF 2019) is Director of Learning and Partnerships at the Migration Museum in London and a Trustee of the charity Migrateful. Over the last two years, she has been developing a Migration Network of cultural organisations to share knowledge and experience and increase confidence in working with and sharing the stories of migrant communities. The Network is helping to improve work on migration and intersecting themes across the UK museums and heritage sector and beyond, creating regional and national platforms for those with lived experience of migration and building confidence in the sector.
Emily has been awarded one of our Activate grants to further develop this network and increase its reach and impact. The funding will enable her to work with a steering committee of leading experts in this area, including Migrant Voice, who will advise on how to formalise the Network and further involve those with lived experience of migration. Emily will initially run a series of online events focusing on different themes that have emerged in the comprehensive evaluation of the Network’s first phase, for example organisations working with asylum seekers and refugees, those in the heritage sector who are working with schools to respond to migration in the national curriculum, and those with experience of running migration themed exhibitions. Emily will also develop a toolkit of resources in consultation with the Network’s steering group and will evaluate the impact of these activities to further develop the Network.
Emily hopes that this work will equip cultural organisations with the confidence, resources and networks they need to provide an effective platform for migrant voices and to encourage integration. She has already received considerable demand for this offering, with over 700 people signing up to attend the events in phase one.
Emily’s Fellowship explored the role of a migration museum in fostering integration and was supported by the Linbury Trust.
