Intergenerational leadership

Introduction
Black communities in the UK are often disproportionately affected by poverty and social inequality. Community leaders from Black and minoritised ethnic backgrounds are a vital component for ensuring that the needs of their communities are addressed and that they can flourish. These leaders need to be supported and equipped to do this work.

Yvonne Field (CF 2012) is the founder and CEO of the Ubele Initiative, an intergenerational leadership project which she set up as a result of her Fellowship and which supports the development of a new generation of Black and minoritised ethnic community-based leaders. Ubele’s 2015 report, A Place to Call Home, identified an urgent need for elder leaders from Black and minoritised ethnic communities. The research found that the first generation of community-based leaders were ageing or ill and that it was vital to capture their knowledge and experience as valuable learning for younger emerging community leaders.
Yvonne has been awarded one of our Activate grants to capture this learning through running an intergenerational leadership retreat and developing resources which will facilitate knowledge exchange. The funding will enable Yvonne to conduct interviews with colleagues, elder leaders and younger emerging leaders to capture their knowledge. In addition, as Yvonne herself approaches retirement age, it will act as a stipend to allow her the time and space to reflect on and capture her own leadership journey and to review Ubele’s existing leadership resources. She will spend time collating and synthesising the key insights from all this, to share with community leaders. Yvonne will then design and co-facilitate an intergenerational leadership retreat for up to 12 leaders from within Ubele to share, explore and challenge the emerging themes and to generate and capture new insights and ideas. From this, she will work with colleagues to prepare a draft intergenerational leadership model and resources that can be tested within Ubele and other settings.
Yvonne hopes that this work will lead to the creation of a sustainable intergenerational leadership model that allows Ubele to continue to run effectively after Yvonne’s retirement. In addition, she hopes the model can be scaled up and replicated across other organisations to support marginalised communities all over the UK to thrive.
Yvonne’s Fellowship explored ways to create future community-based leaders from the African-Caribbean community and was supported by The Rank Foundation.
